In this article, we will demonstrate and review the ten best ultralight backpacking tents for 2020.
We all love going for a hike and spending a few days in nature. Most of the time we need to fit everything in a backpack which we will have to carry for long distances. What you choose to take is vital for enjoyment, comfort and safety. Thus weight is a very important factor when we talk about backpacking tents. Another significant factor is rain resistance because after long hours of hiking we deserve a good dry sleep.
Remember to always setup the tent in a comfortable environment, probably in your garden, before you go hiking. You might need to set up the tent in unfriendly conditions and trying to go through the manual will not be ideal.
The Best Ultralight Backpacking Tents of 2020:
- Floor area: 2.7mx1.62m
- Height: 1m
- Weight: 1.54kg
There is not a lot to say about the quality of MSR products. However, they come with a very high price tag. In this category, the MSR Hubba Hubba is a two man tent at a very high level. This model has been around for over ten years but now they have made it even better. It’s a three season tent which was cleverly engineered and it will make a comfortable shelter. There is one main pole and that maximises the internal space giving us extra head and shoulder room. As a result of the clever design, the floor area is 2.7×1.62 and the height is 1m. Hubba Hubba has two large vestibules that can be used to store gear. We tested this tent in the deep winter of the Scottish Highlands for one night and it managed to pass the wind and rain test exceptionally well! We loved the versatility of this tent and how easy it was to set it up. We definitely recommend this one and it was the best amongst the tents we tested.
- Floor area: 2.7mx1.4m
- Height: 1.1m
- Weight: 2.4kg
This is definitely the cheapest hiking tent on our list. However, it can be used for mountain hiking and provide a very good shelter. This nice entry level is easy to fall in love with and can provide substantial cover from normal rain. On the other hand, we did not feel convinced that the tent would tackle high winds and heavy rain in the most extreme conditions. Hewolf 2 is a two pole tent with a big area of mesh to provide great ventilation. It is relatively easy to setup if you have used a camping tent before.
There are two different instructions in the bag. Unfortunately, the one attached to the bag is in Chinese. You will need to look carefully in the bag to find the English instructions. It is a 1-2 person tent and when we tested it we managed to fit two people with the sleeping bags. The average height of the campers was 5.5”. We definitely recommend this tent if you are a beginner and you do not want to spend too much money on gear. This tent will satisfy you 100% if it is used in the correct conditions. Also, do not forget to use the lifetime guarantee Hewolf offers to all of their customers.
- Floor area: 2.25mx1.85m (Excluding porch area)
- Height: 1.1m
- Weight: 2.91kg
Berghaus is an outstanding brand which produces high quality hiking gear. This is the only 3 Man tent that we included in our list. Subsequently is the most spacious tent of all with a height of 1.1m. Despite its size, it is very lightweight (2.91kg) and can be a perfect all-rounder tent. It provides a huge porch (nearly 3sqm) that can be used to store wet boots and the rest of your muddy gear. Colour coded poles will make fitting easier and the tent can be pitched up in less than 5 minutes. This tent is suitable for all seasons but we did no test it in extreme conditions. However, the great build quality can assure us that it is able to handle heavy rain and mountain gales. We definitely recommend this tent if you have the ability to carry it because it will free space in the backpacks of the other two people to carry extra supplies. To summarise the biggest advantage of this tent is that it can be used in activities outwith hiking. Berghaus Peak 3 can be perfect for festivals or for a week break.
- Floor area:
- Height: 77cm
- Weight: 2.05kg
Coleman is a very reputable outdoors company. They have many years of experience making camping equipment and we can see that they managed to produce a well made tent. The Cobra two is a very lightweight tent with a unique design which makes it very effective against strong winds. The tent was tested in heavy rain and did not allow in any water. However, the condensation was a small issue but this is a common problem with small tents. It is very lightweight (2.04kg) and the floor dimensions are 3m x 2.35. Quite simple to put up and it will take less than 10 minutes. A good size tent for a couple which will still allow enough space for the rest of your gear. All in all, it is a reliable tent that will not let you down even in the most unfriendly weather conditions and for this price, it is the ‘best for value’ tent.
- Floor area:
- Weight: 1.42kg
The Vango F10 Helium UL 2 is a two man tent which is easy to pitch. It provides a reliable shelter with a promise to keep you dry with 6,000mm hydrostatic head (HH) polyester flysheet the highest in our comparison list. The pre-bent poles are easy to fit and can withstand high winds. The well placed mesh will reduce condensation and increase breathability providing you with a more comfortable sleep. The bag is big enough to fit the tent and the compression straps will allow you to squeeze it down so it can fit in your backpack.
Paria Bryce
Paria is a small company that develops outdoors products. It is located in Colorado and their target is to design products which will help people to explore the amazing outdoors. We could not leave their tent out of our list because they have really created an outstanding product which can be used for fishing, camping, biking and hiking. An important characteristic of the company is that they offer a lifetime warranty and they offer friendly customer support. We are happy to back this product because it is very well developed and it was produced by a small company that pays attention to detail.
The tent is easy to set up in less than 10 minutes. It has one door and the vestibule is big enough for boots and small packs. The only slight drawback is that the flysheet does not extend enough which might cause an issue if it rains and there are extremely high winds. The reflective colour will make it stand out and you will easily find it amongst other tents.
